Over a year I drove to Clay La Force's home in Temecula - for mysterious reasons the publication of the magazine to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the school was then delayed, and delayed again. for UCLA magazine....I know nothing about American football but he was a great guy. American football is even more specialized than I imagined...

When John Wooden died earlier this year UCLA magazine (for people from other parts of the world he was a legendary basketball coach here in LA - leading UCLA to 10 national championships in 12 years) into overdrive to produce a commemorative issue (which they later won an SPD award for)....and then someone noticed the impromptu memorial that had sprung up on campus - and I got a call with no more instruction than "to make it interesting"
