March Comp Report

April 1st, 2012

We were all surprised by the swell coming up overnight to a respectable two to three foot with reasonable form. It was an unusual surf because the wind from the north west didn’t smooth the surface as it normally does and we had to deal with a rattily uneven break with a degree of unpredictability. Nonetheless in the scheme of things the lack of free surfers and the temperate conditions made for a pleasant day of competition surfing.

Josh again headed up the Juniors in which will be his last season in this Division and showed us he is ready for the senior ranks starting in the new comp year in May this year. Good to see Luca back and surfing well enough to take second ahead of Will who is progressing well with some great attempts at crosstepping.

Josh’s uncle Rob C grabbed the first heat of the seniors ahead of a strong performance by Phil C. The second and third heats were predominated by our top Club performers Jason and Sean with Troy M catching heaps of waves and surfing well to take second in the third. Simon C is mastering a new board and did some nice slide re-entries to take the fourth heat against Neil F who bravely pushed through with an injured shoulder. Tom L showed his determination and class, even though surfing with bulging disks in his back, to outclass the field to take the fifth. Wayne M was not headed in the sixth heat taking a couple of nice right handers to seal the win.

Conditions held for the second round and everyone seemed to grab a bag of waves to display their skills. Josh again ruled the Juniors but nor after a nasty over the falls stack and a near collision with another surfer. Luca pipped Will to take second. One of the highlights of the day was the inaugural appearance of Charlotte who surfed the second round of the Juniors and along with Taj slid into some nice rollies to post scores and get some points towards the end of year placings. Nice work Charlotte and it augurs well for the future of the Club to see these guys coming through.

Muz redeemed himself from the first round and surfed strongly to edge out Lindsay to take the fourths.

Steve B totally blitzed the rest of the field in the thirds with two screamer waves right at the beginning of the heat – His scores were the equivalent of any of the second round including the guys in the firsts.

Phil C used local knowledge to start the seconds early with a couple of nice right handers and was never in doubt as he shaded Alex H and Graeme W.

What a line up in the firsts with the Clubs premiere exponents battling out the final. Jason again prevailed displaying an uncanny knack to land wave after wave and perform to top standard on each. Sean snapped a couple of crunchy right handers but was beaten by some shore close outs. Rob C again showed his class and style to come in third.

Thanks to Rob C and Chris for getting and preparing the food. Bobby L wasn’t happy with the quantity on offer and Rob C committed to a a la cart menu next comp to meet the dilettante tastes of our selective members.

We decided to have our final meet for the present competition year on the 15th and this will start @ 12PM – Look forward to seeing you all there and getting the roll going for the Maljam which will be held on the 28th. Cheers folks, Phil Nicol

February Club Comp Report.

March 3rd, 2012

A great start to the year with two foot peaks, medium density crowds, warm weather and an eager contingent of North Curly surfers looking forward to the double point monthly comp that was to be contested.

Thirty surfers took to the water during the morning and there were some classic encounters to liven the spirits of the combatants. The Juniors hit the waves at 7:30 and Josh landed some great right handers and showed his improvement with some top re entries. Will had a consistent heat to run second with Jayden just a shade behind taking third. A big welcome to the two new Junior competitors that joined the ranks, namely Byron and and 7 year old Taj, both of whom surfed credibly and provide us with a nice base for the future.

The seniors were blessed with some pretty consistent waves and had the opportunity to display their talents in the mild conditions. Simon C did some great lip smacks to take the first heat whilst Jason L again disappeared regularly in the tube to blitz the second. The Thirds was dominated by the controlled surfing of Rob C and the fourth saw Tom L again use his evolving style to walk into first place. Godfrey caught the wave of the day to take out the fifth and progress for the first time into the Firsts in the second round – Well done mate!

The conditions held nicely into the second round though the waves were a bit fuller with the peaking tide and the consistency a little less predictable. Josh again proved masterful in the Juniors to eclipse Jayden into second who this time showed us his developing walking skills. The Fourths proved sweet revenge for Lindsay - not a happy chappy after his first round performance- who grabbed some great rides to edge out Neil F who was also a big improver on round 1. Mike R cross stepped superbly to grab the thirds ahead of some nice climb and dropping by Muz. The seconds belonged to Griggsy who built nicely on his successes the previous day down at the DV8’s – His start to the year augurs well for his State Titles assault this year. Graeme W, the quiet achiever, did some admirable work on the face to come in a creditable second. The best surfers in the Club battled out the honors in the Firsts and Jason scored a combined total of 16.5, again with some freakish cover ups, to shade Tom into second place just ahead of Sean who is recovering nicely from injury.

Many thanks to Rob, Neil and Lindsay who took care of the catering for the day. We will be having a Maljam meeting at my place on March 13th so try and make the night to get involved in the organisation of our  signature event. Remember to patronise your sponsors DYRSL, Dripping Wet, Bennetts and 4 Elements who help us with dollars and merchandise. See you all at our next comp on the 25th March.

November Club Comp

December 1st, 2011

This was the day we had been waiting for – clear skies, full but contestable surf, westerly offshore, manageable crowds and eager competitors. Curly was a picture off a travel brochure as short boarders mingled with us longers, a multitude of nippers paddled , ran, dived and swam and the late Spring sun warmed and tempered our bodies. The day was only compromised by the fullness of the surf that fattened even further as the tide rose into the morning. The wind at times pushed the guys off the back as they paddled in thus testing not only surfing but also the broader set of watercraft skills. An indication of the fullness was the sight of Phil Callum scurrying back home to pick up a ten footer to better handle the conditions.

The first heat belonged to Muz who had a warm up surf prior to the start to loosen up the bones. He landed a couple of nice peaks and climbed and dropped well in the conditions. The second heat pitted Tom against Phil C with the former landing some crisp snaps and solid walking to take the points whilst in the third Simon C continued his good form from the Central Coast comp to out surf Wayne into second and Chris into third. Rob C proved the back of the board was a great place to be as again he landed the waves of the heat to get the better of Griggsy in a tight finish. Darren used the big Farrelly to the create some great left handers to nudge out a really solid performance by Steve B. The Junior division was again dominated by Josh who has really kicked on this year as he relishes the freedom his new Bennett has given him.

We contemplated an hour break as the tide maxed out but decided to push on into the second round. The finals provided some top performances given now the extremely inconsistent swell and quite strong offshore.  Again Josh landed some juicy peaks and worked the inside sections well to push the ever improving Jayden into second place. Mike B came back with a vengeance in the Fifths and displayed his strong reliable style on a couple of left handers to beat Brewster and Adonis (Lindsay).

The fourths was a redemption ride for Graeme, who could only land one wave in the first round, but showed us his true strengths to create a nice win over Neil and Troy.

Tim ruled the thirds and was consistently in the hot spot for some excellent A frames that he climbed and dropped with great skill. Doc attacked both the left and rights to grab a creditable third ahead of a solid display by Chris.

Wayne employed all the guile and craftiness that comes with experience to slip into two nice left handed shories right on the edge of the competition area to start the seconds with a bang. The other guys, Steve B and Phil C, couldn’t charge down the lead he so nicely set up.

The firsts saw a great display by Tom who received a score of 8.5 by one of the judges for his aggressive handling of the lip and fine nose riding – Great effort Tom this was one of your best wins! Muz had a great final finishing second displaying some of the fine close to the curl style that he has developed this year.

Great to see Sean Dry back in the ranks and doing a heap of judging , and although not surfing yet, is rebounding nicely from a badly injured thumb. We had a bit of fun earlier in the day as a professional photographer, Tim Bauer, took some snaps of the boys and girls that were to be submitted to a client who was , making an ad for some later life lifestyle drug (legal). Tim has a great bio and has had a career over two decades and has travelled with Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Duran Duran and Simple Minds. He has shot editorial portrait work for Audrey Hepburn, Andy Warhol, Russell Crowe, Charlton Heston, Margaret Thatcher and the list goes on. Tim said he has never seen so much talent in one place (at Curly) and feels confident that some of the boys and girls will be used by his client. We wait with bated breath.

REMEMBER WE ARE HOLDING THE AGM ON THE 11TH OF DECEMBER. We will get down there around 8’ish, have a free surf, hold the meeting on site and then indulge some Christmas Cheer. Rob C and Griggsy are working on a super spread. Everything will be provided by the Club, so be there!

Also please patronise our sponsors especially DYRSL who recently gave us a cash grant and the great folk at Dripping Wet who always come to the party with prizes for our monthly comps.

Look forward to seeing you all at the AGM where we will make a decision about our first comp for 2012.

October Comp Report

November 3rd, 2011

The weather again blindsided the Weather Bureau who had predicted radical conditions for the Sunday morning. We had a mild southerly onshore with a rather full two foot swell breaking close to the beach on a rising tide. The day presented us with the four seasons as the rain and sunshine took turns to alternately drench and then dry us out throughout the morning.

Mike R stepped through heat 1 to eclipse the ever consistent Phil Cullum whilst Tom grabbed some tight inside nose rides a nice off the top to beat Chris into second. Jason continued his unbeaten record this year lining up some nice cover ups and displaying his tight to the curl approach as the waves approached the sand. Mike G landed some great rides from the outside in the fourth and created some great walls with his patient and functional style as Graeme W continues his impressive progress and created some great scoring opportunities with sensible wave selection to sneak into second. Simon C had a couple of nice reentries to slide past a strong performance by Steve B to clinch the fifth.

We had a short break before the second round and enjoyed the gastronomical delights that Chris and the crew rolled out on the BBQ. Thanks to Girggsy who organised the catering in the absence of Rob C. Griggsy continues to be one of the main stalwarts of the Club.

The tide kept rising and some pretty heavy rain sent the judges scattering as the second round took to the water. It was great to see father pitted against son as Lindsay and Will battled out the honors with the former just taking the Fifths ahead of Bruce and the effervescent Will. Alex laid on the goods to out surf  Marty who had one of his best comps this year. The thirds was dominated by Darren who used his big Farrelly to out paddle the competition  and trim into some nice walls. Troy took second place and shows great progress with his walking technique. Graeme W again produced the goods with a couple of long rides that he climbed and dropped nicely to take the seconds just ahead of Muz who landed some radical reentries in the shories. The firsts contested in pretty inconsistent conditions where water craft and patience proved to be the order of the day. Jason proved his quality by sliding into the best waves of the heat and bottom turned beautifully to set up his signature off lip snaps. Not far behind whilst catching a bagful of waves was Tom who again shows he is the best walker in the Club with some great inside rides.

Our best wishes go out to Sean Dry, our current Club Champ, who seriously injured his thumb whilst working on the family property in the Hunter Valley. Sean will be off the water for at least a month and we wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return to the ranks.

Great to see Mike B and Chook attend their first comp for the year after both have had on packed agenda for 2011. Likewise nice to see Andrew B back surfing. After being off the water and missing the water for a couple of months it was nice to be back and should be back paddling by February – looking forward to it!

It was so gratifying to see North Curly come equal third in the recent Five Ways after a couple of pretty ordinary years. Let’s keep working hard and get into the top two in 2012 which will be held at Longreef. The GT schools have helped us and we need to keep applying the principles he has instilled into us.

Look forward to seeing you all in November  - Phil Nicol
