North Curly refused to come to the party with any waves at all on the Sunday morning so we migrated down to South Curl Curl where we contested in one to two foot shories. Not fantastic but at least adequate. A light westerly provided an offshore as the Club saw thirty three surfers take to the water – this is the biggest winter comp we’ve had for quite some time.
The highlights of the first round include Josh’s spectacular stacks in the shore break and dedication to catching as many waves as possible to take out the Juniors. Jason again blitzed the field to take the first heat, Alex and his consistency the second, Phil N squeaked in the third, Tom “walked” his way into the fourth, Sean “ wiggled” to victory in the fifths and Lex’s classic style won the sixths.
Great to see a huge performance from our two new members on the day, namely, Scott and Brett: The latter surfing superbly to be second to Sean whilst Scott went well in the difficult conditions to score well in the fifth heat. Good also to see Chloe come and surf with us - we need more ladies in the Club. Jayden went well to secure second in the Juniors and Graeme did well to get third behind Mike R to take third in the first heat.
The second round was marred by the dropping tide and unpredictable waves but nonetheless we saw some great performances. Luca turned the tables in the Juniors with some power surfing to eclipse Josh who to this point had been having it all his own way. Muz made amends for an average first round to take the Fifths whilst Nick E, after a late start to the heat, grabbed a couple of pearler right handers to nudge out Godfrey in the Fourths. Wayne and Simon C clashed in the Thirds with the former cracking a couple of nice re entries to take the day. Mike R had a great win in the seconds with his intelligent wave selection and superb walking of the board – Mike you are a delight to watch on the water. The waves were really inconsistent as the firsts took to the water to see Jason just get the better of Sean.
Congratulations to Sean who came the closest second in the Australian Titles over 40’s – he was beaten by 0.25 of a point in surf that would make the average surfer cringe with fear.
I was there and I tell you that we are privileged to have Sean in our ranks given his performances at both the NSW and Aussies. Well done mate!
We didn’t have any BBQ this month because of the change in venue but Rob “5 hats” Coriel was making noises about bringing some exceptional gastronomical delights down for the September Comp – Put your orders in now. Simon C is waiting for emails from those who wish to join the GT training school which will probably be in the third week of September. We will keep you all posted. I am sending off the order for the last of the skateboards so get in quickly if you want one of these high quality bargains.
The five Ways will be held on the 16th of October – you will find more details posted on our web site. Good luck to Phil C, Tim R and Jayden who are heading North the Old Mal Titles at Crescent we expect some great performances. Mike Baird has been in touch and he sends his regards to everyone and explains his absence - he mentioned something to do with a budget?
Look forward to seeing you all at the September comp where I’m sure the waves and food will be “par excellence".
Regards, Phil Nicol

Some great pics from Rob C.
Curly Longboarders had a successful comp with Josh C winning the juniors and Luca C 3rd place. In the over 46's Rob C second place and a 5th in the Open 8ft. Lex took 2nd in the Old mal and Tommy 4th in the Open 9ft. Well done lads.
There's been some rumours and shaky detail about the Saturday night activities that may have affected some of the other Curly competitors semi finals performance on Sunday morn. We await further dirt.
Also, hot off the press - Yesterday our own Sean D snared 2nd place in the Over 40's division at The Australian Longboard Titles. And El Presidente Phil N - a Semi Final place in the Over 60's division.
Congratulations to all.
