October 2007 - Tournament Report

October 31st, 2007

We were greeted with a perfect Spring day - warm weather, blue skies and minimal wind. The surf was one to two feet and breaking just enough for longboarders to catch a wave. As the day progressed the high tide made conditions a little full but still rideable.

The comp started with the first of two junior heats and all agreed that this was one of the most hotly contested junior heats of the year. The level of surfing was inspirational and Ali with her excellent walking and wave selection just eclipsed Mitch and Nickii. Good to see Roisin back from injury and surfing well. The second heat saw the ever improving Tom win from Josh.

The seniors hit the water and Dallas, reveling in the looseness of his new board hang on to beat Steve B and Tom L. Mike G climbed and dropped his way to just take the second heat from Bobby L. Greame C, riding his self made ply board (everyone was stoked with the workmanship and weight) , britzed the next heat whilst the ever reliable Darren K walked and turned beautifully to beat Flemo in the last heat.

The stage was set and the second round provided some exceptional surfing given the somewhat variable conditions. Luka C caught a couple of bombs to just edge out Roisin and Libby in the Juniors 2 whilst Tom again selected waves intelligently to predominate the Junior 1 from Mitch and Nickii.

Well done Juniors!

The senior 4’s saw Mark T pull off a couple of excellent re entries to win from Marty K with Cairon catching three good waves to come in third. The thirds was won by the steady as she goes Andrew B who used the big Bic to nail some great rides ahead of Simon C and Bruce Huggart who was returning from injury, The seconds saw Tom L convincingly win from Phil and Rob C. The Firsts was a battle royale with the ever consistent Flemo trimming beautifully to outpoint Darren whose contrasting walking style grabbed him a close second. Steve B was strong in third place whilst Graeme C wasn’t far behind.

Overall thirty five surfers took to the water an the day including ten juniors. Many thanks to Andrew for the catering and to young Sam who ran the raffle, sold the tickets and then won the prize. Nickii got the best wipeout of the day and won a pair of thongs to ease the pain of an injured foot.

Remember the Presentation at Dee Why RSL on the 17th.. We would like Club members to chase up some prizes and gifts to be given out and auctioned on the night. See our web sight for all the details. Look forward to seeing you there!

September 2007 - Tournament Report

September 30th, 2007

Excellent weather, offshore winds, no crowds, eager contestants and water temperature of 19 degrees. Surf lapping into the shore at approximately 1foot - the day was nearly called off but we decided to forge ahead given the overall conditions.

All the surfers struggled to get waves but by and large we had a lot of fun on the day. Numbers were down a little because of the school holidays and families heading off up the coast. Welcome to the Blackers – Mike and Mitch – who joined the Club on the Sunday. Mike has been a member previously and has bought his son down to enjoy the activities. Mitch surfs really well and will make a solid contribution to our ranks. Welcome to both of you and we admire you traveling from Cherrybrook to be with us.

The first heats saw Darren, Graham Christie and Lex predominated the tiny shories whilst, as mentioned above, Mitch surfed well to come second in his heat. The second round saw a couple of larger waves come through particularly in the final heat. Lex prevailed in the Firsts, Dean scored his First ever win in the Seconds and Stu performed nicely to take out the Thirds.

A reminder that the Presentation Night will be on the 17th of November and we want to see a gallery of people there from the present and the past to celebrate ten years since the formation of this great Club. Hope to see you all in October .

August 2007 - Tournament Report

August 26th, 2007

Another great day with Spring temperatures greeting us as we began setting up around 7 am. Grand Finals in other sports depleted our ranks a little but still managed twenty one surfers for the day. The swell was 2 foot and a little fullish to begin with but as the tide dropped some nice peaks formed off the second walkway and the boys and girls treated us to some fine performances. Nickii L surfed extremely well to win the Juniors first and second rounds whilst Amy, Ali and took the minor placings with all catching heaps of quality waves. Good to see Roisin back after a bad dose of the flu and the consistency of Libby radically improve.

The Seniors had a ball in the consistent conditions and took advantage of the inside walls to show their nose riding skills or the outside “A” frames that allowed the climb and drop approach. Saun Dry again proved his quality by taking out both the first and second rounds whilst Mike G and Darren won the minor finals, again with some aggressive displays. Good to see Martin continue his vast improvement and Mark T, Lex, Simon C and Gary S delivered their usual predictable consistency.

Welcome to Two new members who joined up on the weekend, James Davidson and Mike Watts. Good to have you guys with us and look forward to your involvement.

We have booked Dee Why RSL for the 17th of November for the end of Year Presentation and ask anyone that can obtain prizes or sponsorship for the night to get in contact We want to make this a night of nights as it is our 10th anniversary and we will get a huge roll up of both past and present members. Keep your eye on the Web site.

Remember also that the Five Ways is coming up Soon and we want a big turnout to cheer our surfers on in this prestigious event. It will be held at Long Reef this year.

Look forward to seeing you all next month

July 2007 - Tournament Report

July 29th, 2007

Seven AM and a few stragglers wandered in expecting the surf to emulate the one foot dribble the day before – Surprise! Surprise! We were greeted with a two foot, consistent and “ longboardable” swell that improved into the day as the tide dropped. In all twenty six surfers competed and the Club picked up three new members. Does life get better than this in the middle of winter?

The six competing Juniors were away at 7:30 and struggled as the tide reached its peak and the surf was difficult to read. Josh handled the conditions best and edged out Ali and new Club member Libby. Although still a little full and variable the main heats hit the water as the swell gained another half foot and the falling tide provided some reasonable left and right handers.

Simon Irvine performed beautifully in the first heat showing his improvement with some classy climb and drops and smooth turning. Mark T showed us his potential with some impressive rides whilst Rob C caught heaps of waves and came in third. The second heat was a close contest between Mick B and Steve B with the latter just edging ahead in what was to be the most closely contested of the heats. Saun D surfed to his potential in the third heat but was pushed with some stylish attacking waves from Lex.The fourth heat saw returning new Club member Mike ( Chook ) Johnston just push Callo into second. The scene was set for the final rounds as the surf held good and the now visible sun pushed the temp into tolerable territory.

In a consistent lineup Josh again showed us his solid improved board control to take out the final from a tenacious Ali and a committed Libby. The fourths saw Mike G start the heat with a well worked wave, which he caught as the green flag dropped and he continued this form to keep Grub to second whilst Gary S took out third and the award for the wipeout of the day.

Flemo came good in the Thirds and showed us his amazing ability to work a wave to the fullest as he sliced and walked his way into first place from Dave and Blanchey. Lex caught a couple of bombs to outpoint Mick B and Mark T in a result that was extremely tight in the seconds. Saun attacked the deteriorating waves and showed us why he came third at the recent NSW Titles using his aggression and ability to work the pocket to extract the best out of every wave.

Overall a pleasing day was had by all. Welcome to our three new members Libby, Chook and Dave – we look forward to your continued involvement. Many thanks to Mike and Clare G who have redesigned and printed off the new judging sheets and to Andrew for his catering excellence. Keep your eyes on the website for information regarding the end of year Presentation – remember this is the tenth year anniversary of the Club and we want a huge showing of present and past members at this celebration.
