What and excellent day for all concerned. The weather was pristine, the waves enticing, the temperature perfect and the level of competition inspiring. Everyone agreed that it doesn’t get much better than this.
Thirty one surfers took to the water during the day and in the Juniors Josh displayed his maturity in wave selection to outpoint our newest recruits Will and Jayden to take the honors. Itwas interesting to see the change in attitudes and styles as a result of the Grant Thomas coaching Clinic we had two weeks before. There was a definite upping of aggression and attempts to break out of the comfort zone. Typical of this attitude was Rob C who smacked some great lips and landed some great reentries – you can see some of his work on the web site wozthatyou.com. Sean Dry knows he has a fight on his hands to win the Title this year and has responded accordingly with some equally controlled aggression. Wayne M has one of the smoothest styles and used it to win the fifth heat whilst Phil N and Simon C took three and two respectively. New member Rob W fine tuned his walking and trimming to get ahead of Tom Leach who is returning to form after a lay off after completing th HSC and successfully obtaining an electrical apprenticeship. Well done Tom – its good to see you back
The waves got better as the day progressed apart from a few lulls in the later finals. Jayden turned the tables to win the Juniors Final just eclipsing Josh whilst in the seniors Mark T really applied the lessons from the clinic to climb and drop to success in the Fifths. The Fourths was a battle royale between Doc and Troy with the former surfing the best he has this year to take the honors. Griggsy followed up his finals appearance in the recent DV8 to just pip our new member Michael R – Here was the classic contest of the back of the boarder versus the trim and walking style. It took a countback to separate the two. Tom L competed strongly to take the seconds from the ever improving Tim R. TheFirsts proved to be a great battle of styles, aggression, luck and attitude. Sean took the day from our newest senior member Rod W with Rob C nipping at their heels. It was so good to see quality surfers battle out the result with winning and losing being determined by a fine margin.
Thanks to Rob C and Murray for looking after the catering.
We welcomed back a founding member and his
son this comp, namely Lindsay and Will G. Again it is inspirational to see the
old guard returning with their children. Welcome to Selena our new lady to surf
with us and again Adam who joined us from further South. There is a changing
demographic happening in the Club and it is really pleasing to see this shift.
Remember we will need all hands on deck to
help run the Maljam that is on the 30th of April and on which the Committee
is working extremely hard. We also are preparing for the end of year
Presentation which this year will be in May at the DYRSL Bowling Club in Abbott
Road. Watch this space for further details.
Look forward to seeing you all at the March Comp – Keep up the time in the water and keep bringing those new members down – Regards, Phil Nicol
