Mollymook Charity Classic

August 21st, 2011

Some great pics from Rob C.

Curly Longboarders had a successful comp with Josh C winning the juniors and Luca C 3rd place. In the over 46's Rob C second place and a 5th in the Open 8ft. Lex took 2nd in the Old mal and Tommy 4th in the Open 9ft. Well done lads.

There's been some rumours and shaky detail about the Saturday night activities that may have affected some of the other Curly competitors semi finals performance on Sunday morn. We await further dirt.

Also, hot off the press - Yesterday our own Sean D snared  2nd place in the Over 40's division at The Australian Longboard Titles. And El Presidente Phil N - a Semi Final place in the Over 60's division.

Congratulations to all.

July Comp Report

August 9th, 2011

After the disappointment of missing the June comp after two attempts and the scheduled July comp we were glad to get a paddle at last. Even so the start was a bit shaky as we contemplated yet another rain check due to small conditions. Frustration as much as anything drove us to hold the comp and at last lady luck smiled and we had a memorable day. The overcast skies deterred a lot of the free surfers and we were left with some one to two foot lines that were quite respectable. The wind held off and the tide dropped to provide contestable surf.

The Juniors relished the conditions and caught a mountain of waves, especially Josh, who surfed up a storm on the custom board that he won at our last Presentation. He worked the inside bank and did a couple of nice snaps to win ahead of Connor in second and Jayden in third. Connor looks as he has grown about six inches since we last saw him.

Heat 1 of the seniors belonged to Tim R who relished the outside break and climbed and dropped to just eclipse Darren W who also showed us his immense potential riding a classic Farrelly log with the 60’s raked back fin that he had no trouble throwing around in the smooth conditions.

Heat 2 was dominated by Alex who is still the quiet achiever of the Club and strung together some really competent re entries and shorebreak moves – not far behind was Troy who grabbed some nice lefts and displayed his progress at walking the board.
Keep up the walk Troy!

Heat 3 saw Jason L, a newbie member of the day prove to be the sensation of the meet and creamed the opposition by landing a cover up, followed by a radical snap and a couple of lip entries to score the highest wave of the day with the judges awarding him 8’s and 9’s for the effort. Great work Jason and it is a pleasure to have you as part of the Club. Mike G came in second by landing a couple of really long lefts and rights that he worked
very nicely.

The evergreen Robbie C won the 4th heat again employing his patience to claim the outside sets and some great carves on the now two foot, workable walls. Graeme W again showed us he will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future with some nice late takeoffs and an ability to read the wave – keep on working G and you’ll soon be right up there. Tom L wowed us with some excellent nose rides, one of which he held for six seconds and then did a nice foam re entry to complete the ride. Tom will be a candidate for the top honors this year. Local new member Neil F finally got a chance to show his wares after turning up for the last three false starts. Neil rode his immaculate Firewire inspired Sunova with great spirit and skill particularly impressing us with his aggression as he hit the lip on a number of occasions – Well done N!

Second round same as the first with conditions now getting a bit fuller and a bit less consistent. Nonetheless there were plenty of waves around and everyone was happy to compete in the warmish air and water conditions. The Juniors repeated the first round outcome with Josh heading off Connor and Jayden to take the honors.

The Fourths proved to be a close affair with Godfrey grabbing the march on Marty and
Mike N with all showing some neat skills.

The Thirds went down to the wire and Muz shaded Phil N to take first place in the abundant waves coming through.

Mark T was close behind followed by Steve B. Neil F in his first comp showed a clean pair of heels to beat Troy and Darren in the seconds. Neil was impressive with some clever inside maneuvers that reflected many years of short boarding in the North Curly break – he displays huge potential and we look forward to his association with the Club. Troy carved well and Darren again threw that big log around to take the minor placings.

The best was kept to last with the waves now being annoyingly full and a bit difficult to paddle into. Again we admired the top shelf display by Jason who again stood out from the field with a display that saw the judges awarding scores at the top of the range. Cover ups, snaps and reos were the order of the day as he cruised past Rob C and Tom L. Both of these latter guys surfed really well but now realise they have a real competitor to now deal with.

Great work to the judges on the day who kept the heat turnover times to a minimum and used much of the new judging skills learnt at the recent Judging School that was run for us by Surfing NSW. We have to keep talking to each other as there were still discrepancies but there is definite improvement in the ranks. Many thanks to Rob C for providing the food and drink and the culinary skills of Troy and Alex for the BBQ – not a morsel left- the food was so good.

In other news it is a pleasure to announce that DYRSL has come to the party again this year with sponsorship. We urge you all to patronise DYRSL and keep an eye on our website where you will find promos and activities that the RSL club will be holding over the
next year.

Finally it is with great sadness that we farewell Will Maris, a former member of our Club, who passed away during the week after suffering a heart attack at a Mollymook Comp a couple of weeks ago. Will and his sons Matt and Justin were part of our Club for years and were great surfers and caring people. Sue, Will’s wife, accompanied him to most of our comps and was part of the fabric of North Curly. Will himself was a keen competition surfer and last year took out a Crescent Head Title to add to his many accomplishment s over the years. We will miss Will and his genuine love of surfing and consideration for others. Rest In Peace.

Look forward to seeing you all on the 28th of August  and wish all of our members going to the Mollymook comp on the 13th and 14th all the best. Good luck also to Sean Dry and Phil N who will be competing at the National Longboard Titles at Port Macquarie from the 14th to the 20th of August. Keep on training as we will be competing against the other four longboard clubs from the Northern Beaches at the Five Ways which we believe will be in mid October.
