March Club Comp

April 4th, 2011

What a contrast to the February meet where almost everything was close to perfection. This month started with choppy two to three and occasional four foot dismembered sets that were extremely hard to gauge in the water. The temperature was ok but the skies were overcast and the wind variable through 180 degrees from the south west to the East – We went very close to cancelling the day but the lure of finishing off our competition year with a 100% success rate was too much to ignore. We have had twelve successive events this year and we believe that this is a record.

The first round hit the water and Alex continued his impressive run this year by taking out the heat from Simon C and Chris. These guys were like warriors in the water and set the pace for what was to be a pretty challenging day. Doug from wazthatyou took some excellent pics of the first round and I suggest that you have a look at the special gallery he has set up for us on his web site.

The second heat saw Josh in his first tilt at the senior ranks outpoint the rest of the field by working the inside break and landing some neat runners into the northern rip – Great composure Josh in really difficult circumstances.

The third heat belonged to Tom L who also worked the inside break and really impressed with some classy re entries and nose rides. The ever reliable Phil C took the second place from Mike N, who just returned from a week at Crescent, in third.

Sean Dry really turned the heat up in the fourth and displayed his ever aggressive approach and landed some great snaps and re entries – He really wants to exert his predominance this year. Rob C Was not far behind and the great style of Mike R took him into third.

Wayne M eclipsed Mike B Mike B in the fifth, at the last moment , after being cleaned up by a big outside set early in the heat. What a gutsy effort from Celine, our lone lady surfer who braved the demanding conditions with distinction – We were all very proud of your commitment.

The finals were even more of a problem as the wind turned around to the East and conditions really deteriorated – It was like surfing in a washing machine but as usual the best surfers triumphed.

The fourths was won by Muz who creased his new Sunova board earlier in the week and was not a happy chappy. Hopefully the win will provide some minor solace. Marty took third from Steve B who had big issues with the conditions.

Mike R showed his class to win the thirds from Chris and Mike N who took out a very creditable third. The seconds had five competitors and the standard of surfing was tops given the mush conditions – Simon C prove too strong on the day with his ever improving attacking style: Rob C was a tad behind and still is coming to terms with the new approach that was instilled at our recent coaching school. Both Simon and Rob will be forces to be reckoned with next year.

Sean amazed with a total commitment to win the Firsts from Alex who is displaying a maturity and consistency that will also see him a real threat next year.

Well that was the last of the 2010-2011 competitive season and I congratulate everyone who turned up and contribute during this really long year. Thanks to Rob C for his catering efforts, Troy for his superb gastronomical and administrative skills, Jen and Simon for the absolutely superb web site we now have.

I also recognize the immense contribution of Sean Dry who has led us with distinction over the last four years. Other mention has to be made of Phil C and Mike Griggs who have added some stick as tournament directors – the turnover times are now first class. Well done Chook for the electron signaling system we now use at the tournaments.
This year has been an excellent team effort.

Like to remind everyone that we have locked in the 21st if May as our Presentation Night and it will be held at DYRSL Bowling Club. Many thanks to Andrew B who did all the work in organizing the venue, catering and administration. The big Event will of course be the MALJAM which will take place on 30th of April and I would like everyone to put that date aside to compete and help out to make this, an inaugural event, the best ever on the Northern Beaches. We hope this Event creates a new standard for modern longboarding.

The Committee has been working smart and hard to do justice to this new concept. Tim Reilly has made a major contribution to this Tournament and we will work our hardest to secure a great return for the confidence that he has placed in us.
Note also that we have decided not to have our April Comp because it falls on Easter Sunday and the  week after  is take up by the MALJAM  - Have a great Easter and be reinvigorated for the 30th.

Finally we offer sincere congratulations to Mike Baird, a member of the Club for the last four years, being re-elected as the Member for the seat of Manly in the State Parliament. Mike will also be given the Portfolio of State Treasurer, a position that literally sees him making decisions that will impact the lives of millions of people in NSW. We don’t envy his challenges but have complete confidence in his abilities and judgment to discharge his responsibilities at the highest level.

Look forward to seeing you all at the MALJAM and on behalf of the Committee wish you a great happy and safe Easter break.

Regards, Phil Nicol
